June 11,2021

Zhou Yueqiu, chief economist of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, attended and delivered a keynote speech at the plenary session two “Leveraging the Financial Market to Achieve Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality”of the 13th Lujiazui Forum.

Focusing on the role of banks in achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, Zhou proposed that banks can help guide and create synergy for the low-carbon transition of the socioeconomic system through managing the pricing of and access to capital, improving energy saving and emission reduction in their own operations, and disseminating low-carbon concepts. Meanwhile, banks can improve the institutions and mechanisms of financial support for green economy, and help channel more capital to green and low-carbon sectors through investment and financing policies and innovative financial products. To help achieve carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, banks should focus on three priority areas, namely adjusting structures, setting standards and mitigating risks.
